All VOICE services will be arranged and provided via remote video conference software and phone calls until further notice. The SGD trial will include:
- Phase 1 – A thorough record review and team interview of parents/guardians and educational team members to include a formal report defining student current levels, needs and skills, recommendations for language systems and hardware to trial in Phase 2.
- Phase 2 – Device assessment to determine best match speech generating device system, to include follow up documentation outcomes and recommendations for a long term trial SGD system.
- Phase 3 – Long term trial. This will occur as part of or as soon as possible after Phase 2. It is at least a one-month, long term trial for insurance compliance, including written documentation for all contacts, formal insurance/Medicaid compliant report and support to the parent and team re: preparation for funding process/paperwork and response to insurance/vendor requests following submission of funding packet.
Note – extenuating circumstances affecting Phase 3 include:
The student’s primary insurance will approve devices without a long term trial – in that event we would use the Phase 3 hours to support funding packet completion, monitoring device funding with the vendor, and providing consultation in place of Phase 3, the long term trial.
Parents explicitly do not support the use of the speech generating device at home, the child does not have Medicaid or the student’s insurance does not cover speech generating devices – we would then make a recommendation for an iPad based system that is the best match for the student, to be purchased by the district, and provide consultation to set up the device along with implementation support in place of Phase 3, the long term trial.
This description does not apply to alternative access assessments, such as eye gaze and switch access. Those will be determined on a case by case basis.
